On a crisp Winter night in Berlin last year, I was heading to a year-end Bonenkai (potluck party) with my local crew. Kiki was on dessert duty, and she had promised a "rich, decadent chocolate cake." Naturally, my brain and stomach had been in full-chocolate mode all day.

But right before the party kicked off, Kiki burst through the door, out of breath. "I am so sorry, guys! A total kitchen crisis. A last-minute ingredient fail ruined my original plan—so, I scrambled and threw something together with whatever I had left in my pantry!"

We all crowded around the container, expecting a humble, apologetic pound cake. Instead, our expectations were shattered in the best way possible.

Inside was a gorgeous, elegantly marbled cake that looked way too sophisticated for a last-minute panic bake. The moment she lifted the lid, a rich, deeply aromatic scent of coffee hit the room. The sponge was incredibly moist, carrying a bitter, sophisticated depth from the coffee, perfectly balanced by a rich yet surprisingly light mascarpone cream.
